WP4 manages a battery of analyses that will be applied for characterization of metabolic function, systemic inflammation and immunological phenotype. Selected mechanistic interactions will be further explored in in vitro (cell-line based) models. The primary host response outcomes in the human interventions are clinically relevant markers of the metabolic syndrome (plasma lipid profile, ambulatory diurnal blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose levels, insulin sensitivity and abdominal obesity). Secondary outcomes will include markers of inflammation, gene expression and intestinal barrier function.
